  4. DIED, Lowell Thomas, 89, prolific journalist and pioneering
  5. broadcast commentator; of a heart attack; in Pawling, N.Y. Born
  6. in Woodington, Ohio, Thomas wrote for newspapers in Cripple
  7. Creek and Denver, Colo. In 1924 he published his first and most
  8. popular book, With Lawrence of Arabia. A flood of more than 50
  9. titles followed. Beginning in 1930, Thomas combined the roles
  10. of globetrotter and radio network broadcaster with elan and
  11. energy. He hunted tigers in India, covered virtually every
  12. battlefront in World War II, and in 1949 met with the Dalai Lama
  13. in Tibet. Thomas began a new radio show in 1980 called The Best
  14. Years, with features on such notable senior citizens as Bob
  15. Hope and Picasso. Said Thomas:  "The best years have been all
  16. my years."
